Tobacco: Changing Risk Behaviors and Addressing Environmental Challenges (Community Guide Recommendation)
Description of Resource:
Interventions that increase the unit price for tobacco products; mass media education campaigns when combined with other interventions; and restricting minors’ access to tobacco products through community mobilization when combined with additional interventions (stronger local laws directed at retailers, active enforcement of retailer sales laws, retailer education with reinforcement) are recommended based on evidence of their effectiveness in reducing tobacco use initiation. Increasing the unit price for tobacco products; mass media education campaigns combined with other interventions; health care provider reminder systems; health care provider reminder systems with provider education, with or without client education; reducing client out-of-pocket costs for effective cessation therapies; and multicomponent interventions that include client telephone support are recommended based on evidence of their effectiveness in increasing tobacco use cessation. Additionally, smoking bans and restrictions are recommended based on evidence of their effectiveness in reducing exposure to environmental tobacco smoke.
