Pit and Fissure Sealants for Preventing Dental Decay in Permanent Teeth

Dental sealants prevent bacterial growth that can lead to tooth decay. This systematic review aimed to compare the effects of different types of sealants in preventing caries (cavities) in permanent teeth in children and adolescents. It identified 38 trials involving a total of 7,924 participants. It found moderate-quality evidence that resin-based sealants reduce caries by between 11% and 54% compared to no sealant, when measured at 24 months. It found insufficient evidence to judge the effectiveness of glass ionomer sealants or the relative effectiveness of different types of sealants. Further research with longer follow-up is needed.
