State-Level Data Tool: A User’s Guide

State-Level Data Tool: A User’s Guide

This data tool provides state-level data, data details, and charts for many Healthy People objectives. Below you’ll find some information about specific features of the tool that will help you get started.

Data Tables

When state-level data are available for a particular objective, the DATA2020 search will include an objective filter for state-level data.

If available, you can find data tables for:

  • National data (includes all states and are nationally representative)
  • All reporting states (doesn’t include all states but are nationally representative)
  • Individual states and the District of Columbia (only includes states with available data)

The data source will be clearly identified in every data table.

When reviewing state-level data, please keep the following in mind:

  • The HP2020 baseline, target, and desired direction aren’t shown because they don’t apply to national data.
  • Demographic groups shown may be more limited than those shown for national data. That’s because they don’t meet criteria for statistical reliability, data quality, or confidentiality.
  • Years may be combined to increase statistical reliability of state-level demographic data even though the national data may be shown for individual years.

Example: Data from the National Survey on Drug Use (NSDUH), SAMHSA are aggregated for the years of 2008–2011, while national data are shown for each individual year from 2008 to 2011.

Charts

The tool includes an option to view data charts. You’ll find the type of data—national or state-level—in the header of each chart. Please note that charts showing state-level data won’t display the HP2020 baseline and target.

Data Details

You’ll find state-level data details (metadata) for all objectives with state-level data.

Please note that if the national and state-level data sources are the same, the state-level data details will be similar to the national data details. But state-level data details may not always match national data details:

  • If the national and state-level data sources are different, the state-level data details may be different from the national data details. That’s because some fields are different (for example, questions used to get the data), resulting in slightly different measures that aren’t directly comparable. These differences are called out in the state-level data details.
  • You’ll see fewer fields for state-level data details than national data details. For example, state-level data details won’t include fields related to the HP2020 baseline or target.

Check the state-level data tool often!

The Healthy People team is committed to expanding the state-level data tool to better serve the needs of Healthy People 2020 users like you. We’ll continue to add objectives to bring you more state-level data, so visit again soon.
