The Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP) of the Office of Public Health and Science, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, stimulates and coordinates efforts in both the public and private sectors to reduce the risk of disease and early death and to promote good health. Materials listed here are publications that ODPHP has sponsored or cosponsored. They include information for the public, reports and papers for health professionals and policymakers, proceedings of conferences, and more. 

Single copies of most publications listed are available for a minimal postage and handling fee from ODPHP Communication Support Center. To request a printed publications list, please write to: ODPHP Communication Support Center, P.O. Box 37366, Washington, DC 20013-7366. Some publications, as noted, are for sale by the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO), the National Technical Information Service (NTIS), and other sources; these documents should be ordered directly from the sources noted.   • Healthy Communities 2000: Model Standards (Third edition, 1991)
    As a companion to the Healthy People 2000 report, Model Standards offers community implementation strategies for putting the objectives into practice and encourages communities to establish achievable community health targets. It uses a fill-in-the-blank approach to adapt national targets for local relevance and suggests an array of activity-based objectives. 470 pages.   • Locating Resources for Healthy People 2000 Health Promotion Projects (1991)  
    Explains how and where to look for funding and resources, both public and private and locally and nationally. Includes names and addresses of Federal agencies and private foundations interested in health promotion.   • Dietary Guidelines for Americans (Fifth edition, 2000)  
    Presents guidelines for improved food habits for healthy Americans ages 2 years and older. Discusses fats, fruits, vegetables, grains and complex carbohydrates, fiber, sugar, sodium, alcohol, physical activity, maintaining healthy weight, and eating a variety of foods. 39 pages.   • The Food Guide Pyramid (1992)

  • The Surgeon General's Report  on Dietary Fats and Health (forthcoming)  
    This report will examine the importance of dietary fat throughout life for optimum health and the relationship of fat intake to disease prevention. It will focus on fats in the American diet and the relationship to chronic disease, current scientific information on the impact and adequacy of dietary recommendations, and the science base influencing additional recommendations.
