Objective Clarification:
The American Society for Nutrition supports the two objectives-- NWS HP2020–6 and NWS HP2020-7 – that seek to increase the intake of fruits, vegetables and whole grains in the population ages 2 and older, although we note that “fruit” should primarily refer to whole fruits instead of fruit juice, which both the American Academy of Pediatrics and the 2005 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee Report recommend limiting. We recommend that, if specific numbers of servings are not included, that this objective be expanded to say the “population aged 1 year and older.”

Objective Clarification:
This objective represents another opportunity to create congruence between the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and Healthy People 2020. There should be a specific goal for a certain percent of the U.S. population to achieve the recommended servings (in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans) of vegetables each day.

Objective Clarification, Objective Text:
Consider revising to permit quantifying, e.g., “reducing the proportion of people who eat no servings of . . . “, “increasing the proportion of people who eat at least XX servings . . . “

Objective Clarification:
Include further age breakouts

|
Objective Text:
A possible suggestion would be to take out potatoes as a vegetable in the NSLP in future revisions; this forces inclusion of more f/v in the NSLP.

Objective Clarification, Objective Text:
A more specific goal would be to increase the contribution of total and whole vegetables to the diets of the population aged 2 years and older, and to increase the contribution of dark green vegetables, orange vegetables, and legumes to the diets of the population aged 2 years and older.

Objective Clarification:
Special attention should be given to whether or not these vegetables are exposing children and youth to chemicals and pesticide residues. Celery, spinach, lettuce, sweet bell peppers and potatoes are identified by FDA data analyzed by the non-profit Environmental Working Group to contain the highest level of pesticide residues of common fruits and vegetables.

Objective Text:
It seems important to add something about unprocessed foods. Also, this increase would have to be tied to an increase in people's awareness and knowledge about home-cooking.

Objective Clarification, Objective Text, Data Source, Status:
Add comments that suggest Objective Clarification, recommendations to update the Objective Text, information on the Data Source, and detail on the Status. Substitute text, "Increase the proportion of U.S. population that consumes amount of vegetables recommended for age, gender and physical activity by the most recent Dietary Guidelines for Americans, broken out by ethnicity, income and participation in SNAP (formerly Food Stamps), WIC, school lunch, school breakfast and fresh f/v snack programs" Also use BRFSS and YRBS to allow state/county tracking.
