Methodology Notes

LDL cholesterol data from NHANES are calculated from measured values of total cholesterol, triglycerides, and HDL cholesterol using the Friedewald calculation. This calculation is valid for triglycerides less than or equal to 400mg/dl.

Persons are considered to have diabetes if they respond ‘yes’ to the question. Those who respond borderline are counted as ‘no’. Women who report that the only time they have been diagnosed with diabetes was during pregnancy (gestational diabetes) are also excluded.
