Methodology Notes

NCBDDD is collaborating with states in NBDPN to systematically collect population-based birth defects data on neural tube defects in a timely manner. Twenty-four state birth defects surveillance programs that collect spina bifida cases for any pregnancy outcome were included in the dataset. Spina bifida cases are identified using either ICD-9 (740.0 – 740.1) or CDC/BPA (740.00 – 740.10) codes.
