Distribution of Dentists in the United States by Region and State

Description

For total number of licensed dentists nationally and by region and state, American Dental Association (ADA) conducts an annual survey. The Distribution of Dentists is the annual ADA census of all known dentists in the United States, its possessions and territories. This report breaks down the professional population by state and region, along with U.S. totals for: (1) ADA member and non-member dentists; (2) Professionally active dentists; (3) Retired dentists, and (4) Dentists no longer in private practice.

Methodology

A census is conducted annually using a panel methodology. That is, all dentists are assigned to one of three panels, and every year one panel is contacted with one-third of all dentists having their information updated. This panel method of conducting the census was first implemented in 1993.
